Design features

• Shirt: The main body of the shirt is white, but a key design element was the incorporation of red and navy blue in side panels and other details.

• Collar: The navy blue, polo-style collar is a distinctive feature, with a smaller St. George’s Cross and the Umbro logo. The crest is embroidered on the chest, often with a miniature St. George’s flag on the collar.

• Material: The jersey was made from 100% polyester with Umbro’s “Vapa Tech” technology. Retro reproductions are also made with 100% polyester.

• Shorts: The home kit was designed to be worn with navy blue shorts and white socks. However, in the round of 16 match against Argentina, the home shirts and socks were famously worn with the white shorts from the away kit.

• Badging: The original World Cup kits featured a “FIFA WORLD CUP FRANCE 1998” print below the England crest. Names and numbers were also worn on both the shirts and shorts for the first time in an international tournament.

Memorable moments

The 1998 World Cup in France saw a young Michael Owen burst onto the scene, famously scoring a spectacular solo goal against Argentina while wearing the home kit. The tournament also included David Beckham being sent off in the same game, a moment of high drama while wearing the “all-white” combination of the kit. The tournament ended for England with a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss against Argentina.
